Question How is your internet/phone service?
Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on their internet/phone service.

I want to revisit my current plans and see if there's a way for me to reduce my monthly bill.

I'm currently with Cogeco's Standard High Speed Plan (14 Mbps, 60GB cap) and the only complaint I have is the 60GB cap. I also find setting my D-Link DIR-655 router to use OpenDNS eliminates any problems the router had with losing its DNS settings.

Defiant mentioned he has their Ultimate 30 plan (30 Mbps, 125GB cap) and I wanted to ask him, or anyone else that has it, how do you like it?

I am also using Cogeco's Freedom Home Phone ($41) and find it really expensive and at times has poor call quality. I'm tempted to switch to Vonage Unlimited ($30) but I've heard their billing is fraught with fine print and their support is an afterthought.

I am also curious how much bandwidth cap using an IP phone would consume since it would count against my 60GB bandwidth cap. I can't imagine it being a lot but if I do switch I don't want any surprises.

What do you guys use and are you happy with it?

Yes I do!

Experience:
I regularly download files/torrents at about 3.5 MB/s (upload on a torrent has gone to about 120 KB/s) and have yet to have ANY throttling or congestion slowdown during peak hours (apparently the Fiber node is literally right beside my apartment too according to a Cogeco tech installer). Rogers was a throttling nightmare with torrents, but nothing else was affected. Bell however throttles so bad (over the 5 years I used it on and off in different areas) that Skype won't even maintain a call for more than 2 minutes without dropping.

Hardware:
Cogeco gives you this awesome Cisco modem (screams QUALITY to me), I like this because it is not a piece of **** like the SMC wireless router that Rogers forces on you (shipped with open wireless and locked so you cannot change that, also a garbage chipset that needs to be restarted very often). Whatever Bell gives you will be garbage (modem or otherwise), which compliments their infrastructure perfectly, its really a contest with Bell to see which element of their service has the lowest quality.

Cost:
So far I have only had the initial bill from Cogeco which was $143.98, but every bill after that should be $73.39.

For Fun:
My work connection (I work in Toronto but that server gives me really slow results so I use the Hamilton one):

My own Rogers:

I have to admit, my only complaints with Rogers are the traffic shaping and the cap. If they got rid of at least one of the two I probably wouldn't be considering just finding a way to abuse my server for internet connection.

Peter, how is that SMC router/modem treating you?

BTW apparently you can activate a Motorola 6120 (DOCSIS 3 modem) but its hit or miss if Rogers will provision it for you, it depends on the rep you get on the line.

RE: How is your internet/phone service?
I use my own equipment, other than the Arris modem I got through them. Modem seems to work great, but I haven't used many cable modems to really have solid points of comparison.

Interesting, I was only aware that any Rogers connections that use DOCSIS 3.0 must use their SMC Router/Modem without any other options..

This thing right here:

RE: How is your internet/phone service?
The Arris modem is one they gave me when we complained our internet wasn't going fast enough, so I guess not lol. We did used to have a SMC one though. I use a rackmountable DLink for the router.

Had these speeds since we upgraded from the 60GB cap plan to the 125GB cap plan a couple months ago, its like night and day really, but even with that the cap seems pretty restrictive.
